Elder Futhark Rune Meanings - URUZ
Uruz - Rune Meaning:
Aurochs, a now-extinct European wild ox.
Alternative Names Anglo-Friesian/Germanic: Uruz Old Norse: Ur Old English: Ur Other Names/Spellings: Uraz, Urs, Urur, Urus
Uruz equates to the letter U in our common alphabet.
Uruz means aurochs, the European wild ox that became extinct as the last recorded aurochs died in the Jaktorów Forest, Poland - 1627. The auroch size was between a modern-day bison and a mammoth. The Vikings prized these mighty creatures for their enormous horns, which they could use to drink out of, that symbolized courage and skill in hunting. The Vikings hunted the auroch for present use as well as preserving as much as they could for the leaner times and during winter when game was not as plentiful. This rune honors the aurochs and represents raw physical power. The energy of Uruz is the masculine life-force, striving to overcome all obstacles and survive dangers, to adapt to new challenges, to recover from wounds and rebuild strength from weakness. It is that power you did not know you had until facing a tremendous challenge or acting out of instinct without giving any thought to your actions. It is that spark when ice and fire meet, creating motion to survive in search of ones nature.
From the historical rune poems about Uruz we get:
An Old English Rune Poem translated says:
"The aurochs is proud and has great horns; it is a very savage beast and fights with its horns; a great ranger of the moors, it is a creature of mettle."
Uruz is the rune of powerful unconscious shaping energies that need to be guided wisely as they manifest. Keywords: raw primal power, strength, endurance, pragmatic knowledge, life force, courage
This video contains one of my rune poems that can be used for meditation with the energy of Uruz.
