Elder Futhark Rune Meanings - EHWAZ

Rune Meaning Ehwaz: "Horse"
Alternative Names
Anglo-Friesian/Germanic: Ehwaz
Old Norse: Íor
Old English: Eh, Oe or Eoh
Other Names/Spellings: Aihws, Ehol, Ehwar, Eol, Eow

Ehwaz equates to the letter E in our common alphabet.

This is a Rune of trust and loyalty.
Like the spiritual relationship that a horseman can develop with his horse, is a good example of the power behind this Rune. In Old Norse there is a saying that goes: "marr er manns fylgja" (the horse is a man's fetch) indicating how close one spirit can be connected with another to achieve goals with more power than one would have by itself. This rune is connected with Odin's eight legged horse sleipnir. The eight legs symbolize the four legs of one male horse and four legs of a female horse. The both female and male energies balanced out within are able to take Odin ( the higher Self ) anywhere in companionship. Ehwaz represents co-operation, team effort, strength, will-power and determination, you can achieve goals with ease in attunement with the right people and or circumstance.

From the historical rune poems about Ehwaz we get:
The Anglo-Saxon rune poem translated says:"Horse is a joy to princes in the presence of warriors. A steed in the pride of its hoofs, when rich men on horseback bandy words about it; and it is ever a source of comfort to the restless."
